Learning to Fly

Wobbling, unsteady, unsure,
my timidness shines through
in a new pair of roller blades.
I skate hesitantly across the street.
With coaching, I learn to skate down hills.
I am accustomed to the feeling I get—
my heart bounching up in down, flying in my chest.
Pretty soon I am growing confident
despite the occasional spill
Wipeout
Bloody gash
Gruesome bruise.
The way I am growing, shedding my protective cover
it’s a metaphor of the way I live.
Taking my time to adjust
and slowly learning to spread my wings
and fly.
Whoosh! There I go
bravely, down the drive way
proud of my flashy silver skates
proud of how far I’ve come.
Loving the way
that I’ve learned to fly.
