Escape

“Fire!”

Dawn Mitchell ran through the hall screaming, banging on office doors as the smoke filled the corridor. Between yells, she covered her mouth, trying not to breathe in any of the toxic cloud. The ominous emergency alarm was flashing red as it sang in robotic tones, “Alert. Alert. Alert.”

Every ornate oak door on the executive floor had one frightful similarity.

They were all locked.

Tears began to sting her eyes as she ran to the next one, hoping to find some refuge from the growing inferno. As she banged on the wood, and pushed down on the handle, it opened to her relief. She was safe.

Slamming the door behind her, she took a deep breath and turned around to gauge her surroundings. Her plan was to escape from the chaos, yet sheer horror overtook her fragile countenance instead. For the warning she had been previously screaming was replaced by a sound that was not only deafening, but wholly terrifying.

The creature stood at 8 feet, slithering towards a now frozen Dawn as she fainted.
