On Being Cryptic

Ha! A challenge! I never back away from a challenge. Okay, actually I do, or I talk my way out of it. I’m conniving that way.

I have been coming up with screennames for over a decade, and quite frankly it’s getting silly. I think I’ve been everything from acronyms to puns, favorite animal to random medication.

You’d think I’d enjoy it more, since I used to complain about not having a nickname as a kid. Nicknames take time, and when you move every two years, well, it’s not as likely to happen. I’m not asking for a pity party. Life is good, and I actually have a pretty cool nickname at work. Well, it sounds bad, but I like it.

That’s all rambling and irrelevant. There’s an old sci-fi movie—post-apocalyptic, stark, inventive, a little disturbing, and ultimately about man’s struggle for individuality. Perfect! The movie title is THX 1138 (Go! Go now, and rent it!), so I just changed the last four numbers to my birthday, and voila, a vague yet descriptive nom de plume. Feels good to share.

Awesome! Now I’ll rent the film if only to find out what the 1138 means .. you’ve achieved individuality in ficlets that’s for sure.

  • from Kermitgorf:

    random medication, that’s Funny!

  • from Kermitgorf:

I thought your name was a abrv. thanks thx… glad you cleared it up, i should have figured a sci- fi origin..

    {Hating OTOC for thinking that someone born in ‘77 is old.}

I’d always thought your initials were THX and you were born in April of ‘77 (given OTOC ’s comment, I won’t say how old I am), so I was half-right.

  • from WriterDan:

THX . Isn’t that a Stephen Spielberg movie? Swear it is. Never seen it myself, but have heard of it before. Never mind OTOC , Alexa. I’m in your boat. Well, at least in THX ’s. 77 was the year.

  • from artistsrunwild:

Yeah i knew it was your birthday as well especially when i read another of your comments saying you were a father…and alexa take it easy on OTOC shes’s only 12

when i was 12 – 30 was old….now it just looms closer and closer

and i agree with kermit – it makes sense for your name to have sci-fi connotations

  • from Yeah Write!:

wow! so apparently, alexa and thx are like the freaky cat ladies of ficlets (jk! excuse me, “just kidding”... you might not understand whippersnapper’s IM slang… i can tell i’m gonna pay for this!)! ficlets is being overrun with 12 yr olds! (frightened yet?)

  • from BetwINeen:

Hey I take offense to that!
The twelve year olds that are on here (me stovohob, one time, one chance…umm some other people) are just as good as you old people..jk

  • from BetwINeen:

    sorry stovohob…not stovohob

  • from The Ghost in the Machine:

thx 1138 was george lucas’ first movie. he made it in college or sometin like that.

  • from One Time, One Chance:

i love the debate going on here for one of my “omg j/k j/k” moments =]
Yeah Write!’s comment made me laugh though – you should be frightened. we’re the future, ya know. =]

  • from ♠Ana Cristina♥:

Hey, I was born in 1978, just turned 29, and I’m perfectly OK with my age. I don’t feel old at all. I’m a high school teacher who gets confused for being a student, so it’s all good. >:p Age is just a number—it’s how you feel on the inside that counts.
Oh, and that’s a great movie, THX .

  • from Dr. Lew:

im 13, but a 18 year old at heart
