The Cold

She had put up walls around her heart
Due to years of mistreatment
He came along and got to know her
He got over and around those walls
She opened to him like a flower
He plucked her heart from where it sat
He carried it with him
He dropped it a few times
It got a few chips, a few scratches
But he would still pick it up and cherish it

One day he dropped it in the snow
and he walked away
It was a soft landing
but it hurt all the same
It lies there, still
In the cold, alone
Still beating
Due to it’s memories, and its hope
Hope that one day
He would walk by and see it,
and pick it up once again.
