How was I to know then that I’d be the first?

The surgery seemed to go OK, judging from a quick inventory of my past experiences. I have perfect recall of my Tokyo days in the Fifth Generation artificial intelligence project and of my work at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute. I remember my little chats with Ray Kurzweil, Raj Reddy, Hans Moravec, Marvin Minsky. I thought they were all nuts. Especially Moravec, with that fantasy about uploading your brain into a stainless steel robot that looks like a scraggly bush. How was I to know then that I’d be the first?
