“Describe yourself in one word? my interviewer asked.

It was one of the interview questions I hated the most. I thought to myself, “How could I neatly wrap myself into just one word?? Remembering that this was an interview, I gave a canned answer. I can’t remember what I said, but it was an answer of little substance like efficient or motivated. I thought about that question for a long time after the interview.

The question invoked something in me. How do I describe myself? I started thinking about what makes me, me…I’m the prissiest tomboy that you’ll ever meet. I am a realist who will never forget to keep dreaming. I’m extremely out-going person who is crippled by being terribly shy. I can be highly demanding in an easy-going manner. I am an independent woman who is severely dependent on her best friends. The realizations kept coming and coming. My life was full of such organized chaos!

I couldn’t help but laugh. I had found myself and the only word that could ever describe me, oxymoron.

  • from Ariel Christian:

I think perhaps ‘oxymoron’ is the only word that can accurately describe some people. Now you have me thinking about what one word I would use if asked to describe myself in that way, and I really have no idea.
