Somebody save me

Brian leaned against the altar, staring up at the image of Jesus on his cross, painted blood dripping rivulets from his crown of thorns. He scoffed, “I guess you had it worse.â€?

There was a soft shuffling noise from the back of the church. Brian stiffened, knowing it was Gabriel but he didn’t turn around. Shutting his eyes, he drew a deep breath.

“I know what you’re going to say Father. You can save it, I’ve heard it all before and not just from you.â€?

“What does that tell you then Brian?â€? Brian jumped – the priest had come up on him silently and stood directly behind him. Gabriel gave Brian’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze that Brian shrugged off. “I’m not the only one who wants to help you.â€?

“WHY? Why do you want to help me so much? Huh? I’m not a Catholic. I don’t even believe in God anymore!â€? He spat out these last words like so much venom. Angry tears fell from his eyes. “I’m not one of you so why do you care what happens to me?â€?

“If you want the absolute truth, I don’t know why I care so much.â€?
