Ficlets

Run!

Line up boys! Got no time to waste!” Mr. Creete barked.
“Sir!” We all said as we jumped in line.
You ready to run ‘round the grounds?
There was a roar of approval from us, we were all ready.
We jogged out of of our cabin, and set off Mr. Creete yelling orders.
C’mon! Y’all gotta keep up! Me John are leadin’ the pack here!” Mr. Creete boomed.
Mr. Creete started yelling songs he learned when he was in the army.
We were half through chanting a song when I caught Alex’s eye over near the pond. I grinned at her, then set off at a faster pace than anyone else, sprinting ahead of Mr. Creete.
Hold up there boy!” Mr. Creete shouted. “You gotta stay with us!
“Can’t catch up, then that’s too bad!” I shouted back.
Now that’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout!!” Mr. Creete thundered, and ran up to my level, with sweat glistening on his dark arms and forehead.
Why am I such a show-off?
