Years Go By

Catherine hummed quietly to herself, jingling rattles and wondering if sampling a chew toy was appropriate store behavior. She turned to look at the selection of stacking rings, but paused halfway. The man at the end of the aisle, pushing a purple plastic cart slowly toward her, seemed familiar. Oh god. It was Barry, her ex-boyfriend, who she’d dated for four years during and just after college. She walked in his direction, and daringly crashed her bright pink basket into his cart.

“Oh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to-”
“Cat?”
“Barry? Wow, I never thought I’d see you here. How’s it going?”
“Great, great, it’s been what, three years now?”
“God, I guess so.” She gestured to her massively swollen abdomen, “Finding supplies.” She grinned as she spoke.
“Me… me too.” Barry said, a flush creeping up his neck. Cat tilted her head.
“Really? How soon?” She asked, shaking a few stray curls out of her eyes.
“Next month, the wife’s ready to pop.”

Funny, two years ago, he wasn’t the marrying kind.
