The Course of Human Events

I live in a cage.

Twice a day, Master comes to feed me and refresh my bedpan, and if I’m good he’ll give me dessert too. I’m so glad Master takes care of me. This cage is safe and comfortable.

Ian lives in the cage next to mine. Ian is a troublemaker.

When Master comes to feed Ian, Ian ignores him. This makes Master angry because Master is very important. Master says that Ian needs to be more obedient, or else he’ll stop taking care of him and protecting him.

Ian says he doesn’t want Master’s protection.

Ian says Master’s food is yucky and the bedpan service is too slow. Once, Ian told Master that he didn’t want to live in a cage anymore. Master didn’t like that. He put Ian in a smaller cage for a whole week! I think Ian deserved it.

Sometimes at night, when Master isn’t listening, Ian whispers to me. He asks me why Master doesn’t have to live in a cage. He says that Master is just like us, so why does he get to walk around outside when we don’t?

Ian is a bad man. Master needs to punish him again.
