Exhaustion was settling into my limbs in the form of trembling. I was so tired of running. I wanted to stop. My breath was coming from me so fast that I did not have time to inhale.
I was gasping, my chest convulsing painfully. I could hear the footsteps behind me. Why were they still after me? I couldn’t keep going. I had to give up.
There was that voice in the back of my head, but it was muted. It was my self-preservation, trying to keep me running, trying to keep me alive.
I had to stop.
The footsteps were getting closer.
“We’ve found her. We’ve found the demon.”

Great twist ending after getting us to empathize with the poor, persued soul. Excellent job describing the agony and pain of trying so hard only to give up.
