Confession

She reached up, imagining her fingertips brushing against the stars. She only felt the cool night’s breeze pass. The moonlight washed the world in silver shadows and the light air carried whispers far away. If she murmured her secrets, would the words find an ear to confide?

“I never loved him,” she softly said. “He gave me everything, but I never loved him the way he deserved. He thought I loved him, but I was only pretending.”

Nothing stirred in response. The nighttime world continued its course without a pause.

“Why didn’t he just let me go? Why did he forgive me and take me back?” She asked no one. “I didn’t deserve him.”

The darkness encouraged her confession, pulling the words ever so gently from her lips.

“I should have walked away. But I didn’t want to hurt him. I didn’t want him to hate me. I was selfish. It’s all my fault.”

Tears glided down her cheeks. She took deep breaths, trying to still the trembling. She stared out at the night, waiting for forgiveness in the guise of the cool breeze.
