Changing Minds [story.challenge]

It was a waste of time…and tears, Isaac thought, though it was a sin against the only god the people had: the government.
The funeral he was attending, mandatory for the upper classes of the Republic, was for the last remaining descendant of the founders of the Republic of Reason. When the revolution had come, it had swept over the entire world. Scientists, mathematicians, all those who rejected religion and emotion to find the truth, had been gaining power throughout the long ages. The time had come for them to take over completely, and they had. Religion had been eradicated; reason came to rest at the heart of the new regime. And yet the government had taken on an almost godlike power over its people: not divine right, but something very close.
Names like Isaac and Rene became wildly popular. But what everyone forgot was that Newton and Descartes had believed in God as well as science.
But the world goes through cycles. People were starting to remember.
