Snot Banquet

The banquet preparation had been underway for two months. Everything was perfect.

The food: Catered by Stacie’s, veal picatta, oyster scallop soup with capers and a full wine list.

The music: The Fab Faux, an incredible local Beatles cover band.

I could go on forever. The décor, the location, and of course, the guest of honor. It’s not every day I’m presented with a Benevolent Heart from the Women Citizen’s Alliance. I practiced my acceptance speech for weeks. This was going to be my night.

The day of the banquet, I ran into Annette at the salon.

“Oh, hello dear,” she said.

“Annette, it’s wonderful to see you,” I lied. “How are the kids?”

“They’re great, just terrific. So, are you ready for your big night?”

“Oh, you know, it’s just another night.”

“You’re too modest! Have you found a dress to wear?” The audacity of the woman.

“Yes, it’s a marvelous little black number I found at Saks.”

“Strapless?”

“Of course.”

“How cheeky. See you tonight, then.”

She wore. The same. Outfit. I hate that bitch.
