Heartbreak Hotel

We stared at each other like two bulls in a ring. My heart was beating super-fast, my hands were all clammy and I was fighting the urge to throw up on Dylan’s newish-looking Nikes.

And then…
“What’s going on?”
Ah! My knight in shining armour!

Charlie was munching on popcorn, and in his hand was the biggest Coke I’d ever seen. He took a gulp, then offered me the cup whilst eyeballing Dylan.

“We’re talking,” Dylan growled.
“You were talking, I was leaving,” I snapped back.
“Everything is such a freaking drama with you…” A vein was pulsing above his left eye.

Before I could say something nasty, Charlie stepped forward and wrapped an arm around my waist. “Sorry mate, our movie’s about to start so let’s chat later, O… K?” And with that, he whisked me away at top speed.

I stopped once we were inside the theatre. Tears were pooling, and I felt a sob threaten to slip out. This was not the time for two hours of Adam Sandler and fart jokes, unfortunately.

Charlie squeezed my hand. “To the Batmobile, then?”
