Becoming an Operative

“No more lies!” shouted Margie. “Tell me what’s going on at once!”

The impostor Churchill leaped to his feet and placed a hand over the woman’s mouth. “Shhh,” he whispered. “I will tell you all you need to know. But we’re in German waters now, and that outburst may well have jeopardized our entire mission.”

Margie nodded, and he sat down again.

“I am not Prime Minister Churchill,” he began, “but I am an agent of Her Majesty’s Royal Navy, acting as a decoy for the Prime Minister.”

“And your name is…?”

“My name is not important. You’ll never see me again. In fact my mission is wholly different from yours, and I’ll be debarking in a few moments to rendezvous with our contacts in Denmark.”

“What of me and Roger?”

“You are to continue on to Hamburg, where you will infiltrate the SS communications facility there for the next month. Your knowledge of German will come in quite handy, I expect. You will go by the name of Frida Laudenbach. Roger will be your husband Dieter. Any questions?”

Margie had a million.
