The Game Within a Game

There I was, sprawled on the bathroom floor, one arm draped clumsily over the side of the bathtub for support, watching stars and little birdies circle my head. Mendez standing over me with a frown.

My jaw popped like a cap gun when I tried to speak. “What the hell was that for?”

“Do you have a life-size picture of Jodi?” he demanded.

“No, stupid.”

“Does Tom?”

“No.”

“Who does?”

“You do…”

“And don’t you forget it.”

“Jeez, Mendez, you’re such a tool.”

“Just ‘cause you have a spiffy new four-pack doesn’t mean you’re not still a total nancy-boy. Don’t mess with my girl.”

Your girl? Hello! Have you seen her with Tom?”

“You think she doesn’t know about your little ruse? You think she’s completely oblivious to the game you and your roommate are playing? I got news for you, nancy-boy, Jodi knows everything. Fact is, she’s got a game of her own.”

“You mean, she’s playing Tom?”

“The girl’s a frigging genius.”
