My life long dream

“Are you sure, Mr. Taminski?”
I took the pen in my hand, knowing this was it.
“More sure than I’ve ever been, Tate.”
He nodded, and slid the document across the desk to where I was standing, the blank space at the bottom waiting to be filled with my John Hancock. I couldn’t believe it, after all these years, I’d finally made it. To this here and now, and nothing else in the world mattered to me. Not the friends I’d gained and lost, not the enemies I’d made, and not those I’d pushed out of my way to get here.
I signed my name and swallowed the knot in my throat, sliding the document back across the desk. I forced a smile through the beads of sweat that were running down my face like rain down a gutter.
“It’s done” is all I could manage to say, after all these years.
It’d been a perilous journey, and I was finally here, and now nothing could stop me… except the bullet that shattered the window and burrowed itself deep into my chest. I fell down and caught the sniper’s satisfied grin…
