The Present

Karen carefully folded the pink wrapping paper with red and blue cakes printed on it. She found it touching that Kyle had drawn hearts overtop the candles, and knew the perfect place to put it in her scrapbook.

“Hurry up already. I know your going to like it.” Kyle was bouncing from foot to foot with a oversized smile on his face.

She had been dropping hints for weeks, and the unwrapped box in her lap was the perfect size.

Although her marriage had hit a rough spell, that was all changing now. Two weeks ago she found out she was pregnant; he had cried when she told him, and she loved him more for that. She was starting to love him again, atleast. So this was not just a birthday, it was a renewal.

“Open it”, he said tapping on the top of the box.

Karen’s heart raced as she lifted the lid. Kyle never heard her heart break as she pulled back the tissue paper to see a musical baby mobile.

She felt like someone punched her in her stomach. No, she wanted someone to punch her in her stomach.
