My Immortal

Heather played and sang feeling as though she would exhaust her voice and render her fingers stiff for days. All the while he sat back eyes closed, head nodding along with the music. She dared to catch glimpses of him now and then. Once she could have sworn there was a tear on his cheek.

She had avoided this last song all morning. But it was time. The first few bars seemed to snap Him out of his daze. He opened his eyes and stare at her. The melody was powerful before she opened her mouth to sing the words of My Immortal.

She took a deep breath and felt the power about to erupt from her lungs with all the emotion the song holds. Before she reached the bridge he grabbed her shoulders harshly. “Enough!” he growled at her ear. She froze, her fingers hovering above the piano keys. He lay his head on her shoulder. She didn’t know whether to be afraid or comforting so she simply sat, unmoving but breathing.

“What’s going on,” a sleepy voice yawned from behind them.
