Prayers

Doina stood over her sleeping daughter, wondering how long it would last. The old crone had said that Aurora would sleep, but for how long? She shook her head, tears spilling onto her cheeks again. The tiny drops landed on Aurora’s upturned face, rolled into her hair.

She prayed, again, that this would only last a few days. She would stay by her daughter’s side until she awoke, no matter how long it took, but she prayed that it would happen soon. Her daughter breathed, at least, she still lived. Doina rejoiced at that, at least she had hope of her daughter’s return.

Her hand strayed to touch her daughter’s, and she held it there against Aurora’s motionless fingers. She begged almighty God to save her daughter from this wretched sleep, to bring her back at the start of a new day. It was barely nightfall, now, but something worried her. The servants spoke of her over-reaction, but a strange, chill feeling would not leave her.

Mihai had not yet returned, and Doina prayed for him as well.
