No Job, No Food, No Life

Rachel followed her “aunt” for a block, turning a corner and then stopping. Looking around, she tried to get her bearing. She saw a subway station and a bunch of tall buildings. That was basically it. She had nowhere to go, nothing to do. Where was she going to sleep? Where would she get food? Suddenly, the thought of sleeping outside seemed completely repulsive. What choices did she have? Could she find a job? Where? Who would hire a random girl off the streets with no references?

Suddenly, it all seemed even more overwhelming. She sat down on the edge of a cement plant holder and put her head in her hands, starting to cry. What was she going to do?

The whole world started to spin around her as she gulped for air. She was so stupid. Why did I think I could do this? I’m going to die here in the streets, and no one will even care.

Then, as a warm hand settled on her shoulder, she heard a familiar voice behind her. “Rachel.”
