First, the eyes, those faithful harbingers of truth.
Two black half-moons to start and shading to show
where the laugh lines fan out at the corners.

Then the smooth plane of brow,
that lofty tower of intellect
in whose dark cupboards are hidden
moth-eaten songs and secrets.

The short bridge of the nose comes next,
slightly tilted at the tip, a light dusting
of amber-colored freckles sprinkled over the surface
for good measure.

The peaks of cheekbones must follow
two mountaintops that jut fiercely from
the snowy expanse of countenance.

Further down you’ll find the pale rosebud of mouth,
which will be curved either in laughter or in retort
revealing teeth straightened by years
of torturous orthodontia.

The short curve of chin completes the circle,
visibly upturned to satisfy
its owner’s curiosity.

Cascading on both sides is an unruly waterfall,
pitch in color and unpredictable of temperament
refusing to be confined by brush or band.

The end result a face crafted by both genes
and personal history.

  • from John Perkins:

I really liked this. Has some really fantastic use of imagery.
I love the lack of humility in “lofty tower of intellect?”

  • from ♠Ana Cristina♥:

Who says this is based on me? ;-)

  • from John Perkins:

Ah, my bad. I wasn’t thinking, but you’re much too young to be hindered with “laugh lines.” =P

  • from ♠Ana Cristina♥:

Actually, I do possess some “laugh lines.” I happen to think they’re the sign of a good sense of humor. :D

  • from PyroPunk 51 (PPP LoA):

Wow, Ana, I didn’t expect a poem! I liked the lines “in whose dark cupboards are hidden
    moth-eaten songs and secrets.”

Sounds like my brain! Thanks for entering!

  • from THX 0477:

Loved the last line…it’s nature vs. nurture put forth so eloquently.

  • from [ wall.doll ]:

I love the flow of this, much like the brush itself over canvas. I especially like the “lofty tower of intellect” bit.

  • from Valley Fey/Pinprick:

Wow, this is wonderful! I love the last line, but my favorite has to be torturous orthodontia (I was a victim myself, haha)

  • from NightMaiden:

Great job! I really love your descriptions—I agree with Valley Fey/Pinprink; when summer’s over, I’ll actually be free of it! XD Lovely entry, overall.
