Katrina's Shoes

“Katrina died the other day. What a shame. The poor girl was only 9 years old. She was bringing water from the well. She tripped and grabbed onto a live wire” Sister Rose told her fellow nun, Sister Mandy. She was visiting Sister Rose for the week in Puerto Rico. “I’ll lay out my clothes for the wake tommorrow.

“Sister Rose!” Estrella walked up to her. “I’m happy you could come.

“What are you doing here, Estrella?” Sister Rose was surprised. Why would a seven-year-old girl be doing at a wake?

“I want to show you something,” Estrella opened the bottom half of the casket holding the little girl in her first Holy Communion dress. “Do you see those shoes thatgo with this outfit?”

“Yes, what about them, Estrella?”

“You gave them to our Mama when she couldn’t afford new ones.” Estrella’s story bought tears to Sister Rose’s eyes.
