Ficlets

Alive

His rhythm throbbed in the back of my head.
Somehow there was light that butchered my eyes
although the sun had set 37 minutes ago.
I knew it was him right away, nonchalantly approaching my ajar window.
He slipped his leg in and pulled himself through.
Distress? No, that wasn’t like William.
“Sorry I was a little early tonight.. I hope your folks are asleep already,” he breathed.
“They are actually gone tonight,” I paused,”They won’t be back until tomorrow morning. You can sleep here tonight if that would please you.” I admitted smiling.
He was pacing my untidy room as I spoke.
I never did get a smile in return and it worried me.
“Something wrong, William?”
“No, not at all,” he lied.
I shot him a look.
“Ava, I love you.. But I don’t think I can get more attached to someone.”
This was the most meaningless sentence I had ever even imagined hearing.
He continued,”If you ever left me, I would shatter. My life would come crashing on the floor. It’s just easier this way if I am the one to do it.”

My heart stopped
