The Pledge of Allegiance in the View of a Foreigner

I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America.
Why would I do that, I’m from Mexico?
One nation, under God,
I’m not Christian…
Indivisible,
Civil War anyone?
With liberty and justice for all.
That’s a joke right? Slavery, the KKK , gang violence, unequal rights for women…

As we finish the pledge, the room of tired, disheveld immigrants begins to reverbrate with clapping and laughter. We are now officialy citizens of the United States of America. Mi mama turns to me and gives me the biggest smile I have seen on her in years. After years of barely scraping by one our small farm, especially after Papi died, this is what she has been waiting for for so long. My heart bursts with pride for this woman who has been so much to support her family, me and my little sister Anna. This is a chance for hope, freedom, and an escape from poverty.

Maybe this won’t be as bad it seemed only moments ago…
