Passage

Apples and lovers and lovers and stars
Whispering hillside and smoking cigars
Tonight is the longest and loneliest night
In this summery season of distant delight
And he wishes, and wishes.

Those were the songs of a radiant spring
That fortune has chosen no longer to sing
For faraway heartbeats and empty embrace
And undying dreams to return to that place
He rises, and walks again.

Willowbeards wave in the oncoming chill
Away from the piteous summertime hill
Footsteps determined to hasten the fall
On the path to the happiest season of all
And he watches the horizon.

Beautiful maiden and city of gold
Smiling as warm days transition to cold
And watching and waiting for him to appear
The lovers reunion draws steadily near
And she sees him.

Patience is virtue and virtue is hope
Winter arrives with a chance to elope
When lover and lover together attend
Seasons apart can now come to an end
Finally, they live.
