F&F chapter 1 part 3

Nature, of course, was next to nothing of importance in comparison to the male population in Brighton, well stocked in general supply and quality as far as physical appearance if not in manner and rank. Visiting families too varied the acquaintances of the young women in town, and those who were not taken with the traveling gentlemen were often found in favor by the men of the neighborhood. Lorreigh had many friendships with the young men of town, but non had arisen so far as to catch her eye. Her older sister Lucy had been lucky enough to find love in Mr. Lucas Peake, a neighbor and family friend of six years, moving to uptown Brighton and keeping in somewhat steady contact with her sister and family, inviting the first to stay at the Peake family home for a month out of every year. Every visit that Lorreigh and her family made, she and Lucy would share a private joke, that by her next visit, Lorreigh would have “been taken” as well.
