The Cafe

Janis sat at the small table in the cafe, her burnt orange coffee mug cupped in her hands. Smooth Jazz played in the background, and ordinarily the constant sound of saxiphones drove her crazy, but nothing could do that today. Checking the small gold watch on her left wrist, she smiled and took a sip of her hazelnut flavored coffee. Only three minutes more. A young couple entered hand-in-hand, laughing quietly at some secret joke. Janis watched them for a moment before turning back to the large window. It was just about time. Repositioning herself in the chair, she watched in delight as the familiar red pickup stopped at the traffic light across the street. She took a deep breath and watched gleefully as the truck exploded into a great ball of fire. The tiny cafe shook and outside people screamed and pointed at the fiery object. The cafe emptied quickly, its inhabitants frightened. Janis smiled slyly and threw a twenty down on the table as she left, humming a tune. The father of her son was finally dead.
