Pushing For Gold (100th Ficlet Writing Exercise: Olympics)

The gun fired and Brian Oswald and his heat were off. He was running the 200 meter hurdles and so far he was winning.
In the second lane a Jamaican who had gone to an American college struggled to stay with him. The rest of the field was lagging behind, while Oswald rocketed forward, accelerating towards the gold and the world record.
Brian could feel his heart pounding against his chest as hejumped the third to last hurdle. As he flew towards the next one he saw the French man in lane two getting too close.
He pushed harder. Too hard. He jumped early and accidentally hit the hurdle with his back foot. There was a crack and he felt his ankle break.

The pain was agonizing but he kept pushing. He wanted this gold so badly. The pain was going to cause him to black out. But, not before he won. As he jumped the last hurdle the whole field caught up to him.

He screamed and pounded the ground with the balls of his feet. The finish line was only a foot away. He dove forward.

First Place: Oswald
