For a Friend

“She was there.”

Cameron looked up from his math book. “Was she?”

John nodded.

“And?”

John shrugged.

“You didn’t talk to her?” Cameron ask, incredulously.

John shook his head and wrote down the answer to the problem he was working on.

“What is your deal, dude? All you talked about this week was getting an opportunity to talk to her, alone, and when you get it, you pass it up?”

John stopped and looked across the table at nothing in particular. “I just… couldn’t. I’m not ready.”

He looked back down at his book, started, then looked up quickly at Cameron. “How did you know I could have had talked to her alone?”

By now Cameron had his book in his bag along with his notebook and pencil. He swung his bag over his shoulder and looked at his friend with frustration and concern.

“Sometimes I wonder why I even try.” He turned and walked out of the library.
