“Petey? You won’t ever leave us, will you?” Andy looked up at his brother hopefully.
“No, Andy-Pandy.” Petey’s face was grim. Why do you have to make this harder? “Let’s wait for Jane and Gloria.” Their heads turned to see their sisters coming over the hill. Jane was carrying baby Gloria. Once they were at it’s peak, Gloria rushed out of her arms to play with Andy.
“Jane.” Petey looked at the ocean, rather than his twin sister. “They’re talking about a draft.”
“What are you going to do?” Jane’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m making that choice, before they make it for me.”
“Don’t” She whispered savagely. “Do you think I didn’t here Andy’s question? The same question he’s been asking for a year? You are not gonna leave us to rot alongside Aunt Agatha. Do you hear me?”
“You think I want to do this? You think I woke up one morning and said ‘I wanna go to war’? No, I’ve been thinking about ever since Jimmy Kuspiel went. And Sammy. And everyone else. I don’t want to die, Jane. But, I will if I have to.”
