Yet Another Promise

Andy awoke in the dark to find Petey packing. “Where are you going?” His voice was thick with fear.
“Go back to sleep.”
“Where are you going?” He shrieked. Petey put his finger to his lips.
“I have to go. It’s hard to explain.”
“Petey, don’t die. Promise me you won’t die.” Petey looked away from him.
“I can’t promise. Be good. Listen to Jane, she knows what she’s doing.” He walked out the door.

The next morning, there was a note by the sink.
Dear Aunt Aggie, Andy, Gloria, and Jane, I’ve joined the army. I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving you, but I had to. Don’t worry, the Allies will win. I’ll write as soon as I can. Love Always, Petey.

“He promised he’d never leave us.” Andy whispered.
“He had to. He did it… to protect us.” Jane stifled tears.
