The Chance of Riches

Richard had quickly gone from looking like a handsome, young suitor to a poor, insolent beggar. Captain Red Moscow had made sure that he only received enough food to keep him alive. “There are worse things than death.” She had sneered.

Yet, somehow, she knew he was right. As the nefarious captain of the Saint Marie, she could never stay in one place for long.
“Aye, Captain?” Mitts appeared at the helm.
“How long has Captain Richard been with us?” Red asked while fiddling with some rope.
“I dunno. Maybe a week or two. Three at the most.”
“Bring him up here. I have a proposal for ‘im.” Red smiled meaningfully.
Within ten minutes, Richard was at her feet, chin forced up by the pulling of his hair.
“Join us. It is the only escape.” She cried. Mumurs errupted throughout the crowd. A man apart of the crew of the Saint Marie? He leaned in towards her ear.
“Join you in your misery? Come now, Kate, you can do better than that.”
“Oh?” Red stood to her full height. “I offered you the chance of riches.”
