The 17th Summer

Carter leaned his arms on the railing of the house that overlooked the ocean. The sun was beginning to set and it seemed that he was falling with it.

“How could I have been so stupid?” he thought as he placed his head in his hands, “how could I have let her go?”

The summer had held so much promise: a job as a lifeguard, a brand new car, and a chance to win the girl of his dreams.

Carter was popular, well-liked, and known for being the tough football player. His family owned a few hotels on the coast which brought in a good amount of money. He was practically raised in church and had strong Christian parents.

He promised this would be the best summer of his life. But then again, he wasn’t that great at keeping promises in the first place, was he?

His thoughts drifted back to her again. He had messed up and had no idea if she would ever give him a second chance. And at that moment, he didn’t care how tough he was supposed to be.

Carter Williams was crying.
