Can I Take a Message?

My face tingled all over. Heck, my whole body tingled and my eyes widened and I completely freaked out.

“Here,” I said, tossing the phone at Max, who expertly caught it and put it to his ear.

“Tell him I’m not here right now.”

“She’s not here right now,” Max said obidiently to the phone. “Can I take a message?”

I stood there, holding my breath, waiting to see what the message would be.

“Ok, I have that the message is, ‘Jo, sorry about the pool. Maybe I could buy you dinner next weekend. Please.’ Is that right? ...Ok, good. I’ll tell her.”

“Ask how he got my number!” I hissed.

“She wants to know how you got her number,” Max relayed. “School directory, is that right?”

I groaned. I shouldn’t have let my parents put me in. I guess I’d just never thought it would happen. And now..twice in one night.

“Tell him he had no right to call me! And it’s all his fault!”

“You had no right to call and it’s all your- Oh, you can hear her, can you?”

Max looked straight at me and smiled evilly.
