There It Lies

Normally, when presented with a breath-taking setting, one would take advantage of it. But there she stood at the edge of the dock. Strands of her hair fluttered as the breeze ran through them. She stared out into the horizon, searching for the end of it, searching for something she struggled to find. Something about her was different. She’d been told. She felt it, too.

There lies a problem: whatever this change was… she did not like the feeling of it.

A creak came from behind. She turned around and looked at him, smiling. He smiled back. As she turned back to her searching position, she caught a reflection in the water… something that turned her uncomfortable. The girl in the water was not smiling.
