'The Missing Homework' (Part One) Inspired by Agatha Christie's Poirot

Part One: An Unexpected Visit
Sunday Afternoon

Mystery Writer Ariadne Oliver sat in her study staring at her favorite bird on the Amazon wallpaper which surrounded her. She could never work in the cold, and the walls here helped her think “hot.â€? “Now,â€? she thought, “how can I make a mystery that could be read to children but still lives up to the complexity expectancies of my fans?â€? Then she added to herself, “Or, rather, Sven Hjerson’s fans…”

As she was thinking these things, her maid came in. “Excuse me, ma’am. You niece telephoned. She wishes to spend the week here. What message should I send back?â€?

“Well, this is a surprise! Caroline isn’t often interested in visits. Tell her that she is welcome, of course, but she’ll have to walk or take a taxi to school. I simply don’t have time to take her!â€? At this request, the maid nodded and left the room.
