Ficlets

Moving On...

Ben dropped by the house today, my recent ex of 3 and a half years. It was a surprise and the first time I had laid eyes on him since my house party mid-summer when I verbally massacred him. In front of half of our senior class.
My mother yelled at me from the living room as soon as she saw his honda pull up the driveway. “Ariel! You’ve got to be stupid if you think I’m answering the door for that fucking bastard!” slamming the door to her room.
As soon as I opened the door for him, the words got stuck in my throat. I had forgotten how attracted I was to him. He walked past me, and I detected the faintest hint of cigarettes. I looked at him and cocked my head, “Since when do you smoke?” He said he didn’t, but his rapid blinking had become a his tell-tale lying sign. He kept silent. I shook my head and smiled, he wasn’t ‘mine’ to ‘lecture’ anymore. And he hadn’t been for a while.
I didn’t let him stay long.
Besides, I was a working girl now. And I had to get to the theater, Mike was waiting.
