It was never said explicitly. Sort of hinted at throughout the various series that have been written about him or featuring him. When I came up with the character, it was always my intention that he would be African American, but having a character declare his skin color or other physical characteristics is a difficult thing to accomplish without it sounding hokey. Not that it should matter much, if at all.
Well… I did cast Bruce Willis in the role of Blake during that casting couch thing, actually. But we never stated that Simon was African-American?!? I assumed he was and that it was covered ground…
Generally speaking, Simon’s racial background doesn’t matter, although CMTKOM and I have had some side-chats on how it might come up in another story, where a racist character may come into play. In this case, with Hoven being a Nazi and this sequence being told sort of “over Hoven’s shoulder” (notice some of the repeated words as Hoven’s mind disintegrates), it is something that is significant to Hoven, unfortunately…
To answer Fyora: there was no direct reason that Simone would have been African-American just because the boy who summoned her was. Yes, his blood was used to summon her, but… well… blood is blood.
And agree with Howie, insomuchas Simon’s racial background doesn’t matter.
I did mention Simon’s color in my story: http://ficlets.com/stories/11590, but it wasn’t one of the main ones. . Also, it doesn’t matter. . Nice Ficlet, Howie.
