Punctuations of a Downtrodden Life

The rumble. It seemed like life was a sea of uncertainty punctuated by these cataclysmic eruptions of violence. I always thought there should be something more, but what do I know? I’m probably the youngest here, in the crew just cause of my brother Alex.

Life, whether you’re poor or snooty riches, is about connections. I’ve figured that much out. Our friends, our connections were gathering to this random street corner. Their friends were gathering too. It’s what you do. You mess with one; you mess with all. It’s the only way for our kind to be safe.

“You losers ready?” Alex taunted. Chris, newly arrived, gave him a look. The rival group stirred, and someone said something rude. Gestures, slurs, and a few comments about people’s mothers were exchanged. The fight was inevitable now.

Everyone tensed, narrowed their focus. Adrenaline flowed like rain but all for naught. The oscillating red and blue announcement of authority put an end to our passion play and sent everyone scattering. For now.
