Civil war letter Part 3

Oh Hope, why did you leave us? We had every advantage on our side! And even if we did not we had General Lee! One of the most skilled generals that anyone could ask for! Second in his class at West Point and a lovely reputation for moving quickly through the ranks of his regiments… it was all so perfect.
The Confederate States of America are sick. There seems to be no cure for this ailment, either. All we can do now is buy more time and hope for better days.
You were once a feeling that would stay tougher than hard tack. You made us invincible, immortal, but you are truly a thick and chocking fog that hides our mortality in front of our very eyes.
If you find the time, pass through our hearts once more. Let us feel that stinging sense of clarity that comes with the fools immortality once more before we die.
Sincerely,
Edward M. Teffert
