Remembering a Drive

I walked in the door, spinning my keys in my hand. This morning I’d woken up with the random urge to go for a drive. So I had, driven around town and stopped at the downtown plaza, walked about for a bit, and then drove back.
It wasn’t fun. Just different.
So I walked in the front door, spinning my keys in my hand, and went straight into the kitchen to find something to eat. It didn’t particularly surprise me to see Paige there, I’ve gotten used to her popping up in random places. No, my first thought wasn’t Why is she here? my first thought was, Wow, she looks like shit. And she really did. Her eyes were red and puffy like she’d been crying. As soon as she saw me, however, she smiled and brightened up, “Heya Drew! Wassup?”
“Not much,” I replied, and then added for good measure, “Went for a drive.”
She forced another smile, “Cool, where to?”
“Just around downtown, by the plaza,” I replied, before seeing my mother’s shocked expression. I blushed and turned away to grab some cereal from the cabinet.
