In the Box...

“Wait, don’t cry,” Grandpa put his hand on Jeremy’s shoulder. “We did find something that might cheer you up.”
“I don’t think anything will cheer me up right now,” Jeremy wiped the tears away from his eyes.
“Don’t be too sure,” Grandpa said, and placed the box he had brought with him on the bed next to Jeremy. “Open the box. Gently.”
When Jeremy opened the box, there was three round ovals covered in cloth. “Eggs,” he mouthed, and Grandpa nodded his head gently.
“Jay was a girl, Jeremy. And she laid eggs,” he smiled.
“So Jay was more like a Jayette,” Jeremy laid his index finger on one of the eggs.
“We better put them somewhere warm and safe,” Grandpa took the box and put the lid back on. “I’ll put them in an incubator and before you know it, they’ll be hatching!”
“Thank you Grandpa,” Jeremy reached over and hugged him.
He felt that the death of Jayette wasn’t as horrible anymore.
