Mellissa Sue looked Detective Hawk up and down, then shook her head. “Of course I do. I shot him with his own piddly little gun.”

“Stop right there.” Hawk said. Then over his shoulder he said, “Sergeant Bartimaeus, read her her rights.”
Sergeant Bartimaeus muttered under his breath, “Why do i always have to read ‘em.” He fished a folded card from his pocket and read, “You have the right to remain…

Mellissa Sue yawned, then licked the remaining icecream from the spoon.

”....Do you understand these rights?”

“What were they again? I wasn’t listening.”

Sergeant Bartimaeus glared at her, then looked over at Detective Hawk. Hawk nodded and Bartimaeus started over.

Mellissa finally said yes, and Detective Hawk, in his oddly high voice, asked, “Why did you shoot him. Did he beat you, or threaten you in any way?”

“No. I shot him because of his hair.”

Everyone in the room turned to look at Freddy-Joe Youngs long dark wavy hair.

“His hair?” sputtered Hawk. “His hair looks great to me.”
