Brownies for The Heart

After mom came Dori, an older woman with an edge like our housekeep, Ms Piers. She didn’t last long. Then came Kirsten, one who spent all her days locked up in her room watching TV and ordering takeout. Two years ago was Veronica, and I had liked her.
I turned, because the smell of sweets had filled my nose.
“Ooo! Mrs Thomas, what’s that delicious smell?â€? I asked, sniffing. She chuckled, wiping her hands on her apron.
“Ah, just brownies my dear. The best medicine for a hurting heart. I call you girls when they’re ready.â€? Mrs ll enough. She wasn’t overly eccentric or too strict. But, of course, dad decided he wanted another wife and along came Kellie. Gorgeous, talented, “soulfullâ€? and just, well… happy. There’s no other word for it. Kellie’s alright. But after Veronica, I’d decided never to let another mom into my world.
I knocked twice on Alleigh’s door before she answered. “Hey,â€? she said hoarsely.
