The Epitome of Serious

“Hello?” I heard Eliza answer the phone. I tiptoed back to my room, hopefully unnoticed by anyone.

“Oh, hello Matthew!”

Uh, oh.

“I’m doing well. And how are you? Oh, well that’s very good. Yes, yes. Ah, well then. Sure, sure. I’ll get her for you. One minute. Cassie, dear! Phone for you!”

Shoot.

“Um, who is it?” I called down nervously.

“Matthew Levine!”

“Uh, okay!” I picked up the phone casually, as if he could see me doing it.

“You got it hon?” I heard Eliza say into the phone.

“Um, yeah I got it.”

“Alright. Bye, Matthew.”

“Bye, Mrs Stevens.”

Click.

Crap. Now I was stuck with Matt.

“Uh, hey.”

“Hey yourself.”

I loved how his voice sounded. So deep and rich.

“I was wondering if you could help me with my report. It’s due Monday, and I’m really suffering.”

I was in a tight situation. If I said no, Eliza would be sure to hear about it, and she’d put up a fit. She liked “Matthew”. But if I said yes, I was sure I knew what was coming. Sure, it’s always pleasant. But was I really ready?
