Mrs. Harper Gets A Job

The old lady pushed the pages across the desk with the motion of a poker player on a short stack going all-in. Lucius looked up in tired surprise. “What’s this?”

“You had your choice to avoid this,” she said. “You turned me away several times.”

“Miss Harper—”

“It’s Mrs. Harper.”

“Yes.” Lucius collected his thoughts. “It isn’t that I don’t like you. It’s just that driving a taxi all by itself is hard work, and driving one of my cabs is even harder. Customers expect a certain … attitude.”

“I can do it.”

“Mrs. Harper. It’s just that I think you’d be more suited as—”

“I don’t want that. I want to drive.”

Lucius’s eyes returned to the paper. “So, you’re suing me for age discrimination.”

“And sex discrimination. I know you don’t like that I’m over thirty, and you sure don’t want a girl driving circles around you.”

Lucius studied the papers for a long moment, then said, “Fine.”

The old lady nodded sharply. “So, I’ll see you in court?”

“No,” Lucius said, his eyes coming up to hers. “I’ll let you drive.”
