The Kiss

The plants saw the whole thing.

Right in front of the potted begonias and cheap pink carnations, he grabbed my hand.

In front of the wilting daisies and novelty bonsai he looked me right in the eye.

He knew.

My expressions were shadowed by the oversized palm leaves that brushed up against my shoulder as he directed us away from the lights inside.

Somewhere in this city my boyfriend was out with his friends, having a drink in the blur of the nightlife.

I was in front of a plant shop with a chivalry crazy man who told me he liked my smile.

I told him I had a boyfriend.

We laughed over coffee, I told him stories over caffiene.

I hate repeating myself

Right in front of of the plants.

He kissed me.

Under the fading sky and the scratchy leaves, I had the worst kiss of my life.
