Remembering Under the Tree

I knew where I was going before I reached my car. I accelerated swiftly, breaking so many traffic laws that Rendor would have disowned me if he ever knew about it, and stamped on the breaks as soon as I reached the park.
I shot out the door, running to the tree and went underneath it, through the hole in the fence, straight to our spot.
Not dead, not dead, not dead. I chanted mentally over and over again. It was so sweet. After all the months of complete emptiness, and then the small healing that Paige had brought, I finally felt whole again.
I sat underneath our tree and stared at the creek.
No, she was not dead.
But would she die? I heard Paige’s words echoing in my head.
“She’s dying!”
No, she was not dead.
But she was dying.
And I wasn’t there, by her side.
Where I should be.
